Roughly 2.5 years ago, I published this tweet in November 2018.
Gives me chills.
I was celebrating the humble 414 followers I’ve attracted on Twitter after spending almost 3 years. (I first opened a proper Twitter account in Jan 2016!)
Today, I’ve come a long way. From the humble 414 followers to more than 18,200 on Twitter and over 5000 subscribers on newsletters.
What changed?
Nothing if you ask me. I’m the same ole’ KP to my wife and a huge Star Wars nerd to my friends.
But I changed the way I played the game.
I became a sponge. I studied the greats and made mental notes of what works well. I created tiny experiments for myself and played with different content formats. I went from being a lurker to an intentional creator on Twitter. I went from being intermittent to being intentional.
Here’s the funny thing: Your ego may like to believe so but you really can’t wing your way into building an audience. If you want to be a creator, you have to be intentional on the Internet.
Now why should you care about building an audience you ask?
Check this: Having the right kind of audience helped me:
get a side-project acquired within 2 months
get a ton of offers from startups when I was ready including the one I accepted in public (On Deck)
launch a no-code fellowship smoothly and acquiring customers easily
attract remarkable deal flow to invest in without breaking a sweat
Look, it’s a no-brainer.
If you work in tech and startups, there is an insane amount of power in being a content creator on Twitter these days. But if you were like me in 2018, you were probably winging it and feeling discouraged.
So I decided to create a mega resource called “BUILD IN PUBLIC SWIPE FILE” and open up all my playbooks so many others like me can take the path I've been on. I plan to include anecdotes from my early days, ways to find your voice in a niche like I did, my personal experiments, tweet threads, content formats that worked well for me and make the whole thing as actionable as possible.
As Naval once said, live the book then write it. After 3 years of building in public, I’m finally attempting to open up my vault and share my secrets/playbooks.
“I just needed time alone, with my own thoughts
Got treasures in my mind but couldn't open up my own vault”— Kanye West, philosopher, fashion designer, Internet stuntman
Jokes aside, I am investing a little time into this experiment in my super busy schedule because of two reasons:
When one teaches, two learn. In the process of articulating many of these ideas, playbooks, etc, I get to reflect deeply on the topic and thereby improving my understanding of it
Execution is everything, and even though how I do Twitter will be out in public, ultimately it comes down to actually following through and acting on the advice
I’m halfway done and the resource will be out on Aug 16th, Monday. The pre-orders are live right now (the 1st tier of 50 copies got sold out in 4 hours), the 2nd tier is ongoing and priced at $49 so grab your copy ASAP before the prices go up again.
Thanks for reading, can’t wait to have you as an early beta reader!
